Vadhavan Port: India’s Biggest Port Project Explained

What is Vadhavan Port? Vadhavan Port is a ₹76,220 crore deep draft container port that India is building near Dahanu in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, and it is planned to become the country’s 13th major port.

That one sentence hides a lot of detail. The port will have a planned capacity of about 298 million tonnes of cargo a year. It is meant to handle some of the biggest ships in the world and to cut the cost of moving goods in and out of India. Here at MarineOar, we track the big projects that shape Indian shipping, and this is one of the biggest. Below you will find the cost, the size, the timeline, the people behind it and the latest updates.

What Is Vadhavan Port?

Vadhavan Port is an all weather, greenfield port. Greenfield means the builders are starting on open land and sea instead of expanding an old harbour. The Union Cabinet approved it on 19 June 2024 at a cost of ₹76,220 crore, and that figure includes land acquisition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone at Palghar on 30 August 2024. The port will have nine container terminals, four multipurpose berths, four liquid cargo berths, a roll on roll off berth and a Coast Guard berth.

Many people ask whether “Vadhvan” is a different place. It is not. The government and the press use both spellings, so searches for Vadhvan Port lead to the same project.

Where Is Vadhavan Port Located?

The port sits at Vadhavan Point near Dahanu town, in Dahanu taluka of Palghar district, on Maharashtra’s western coast. The site matters because the sea is naturally deep there. Reports put the natural depth at 18 to 20 metres. Most Indian ports have to dredge again and again to keep channels deep enough. A deep natural seabed lowers that cost and lets bigger ships come in.

Who Is Building Vadhavan Port?

A special company called Vadhavan Port Project Limited is building it. The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) owns 74 percent of it. The Maharashtra Maritime Board owns the other 26 percent. Private firms then win contracts for parts of the work, such as the breakwater, the land reclamation and the road links.

How Big Will Vadhavan Port Be?

When it is fully built, the port is planned to handle about 298 million tonnes of cargo each year. Its container capacity is about 23.2 million TEUs. A TEU is one standard twenty foot shipping container, so 23.2 million TEUs means more than 23 million of those boxes every year. Some earlier reports quote a slightly higher figure of 24.5 million TEUs, so you may see both numbers online.

The government says the port is meant to rank among the top ten ports in the world once it is complete.

Why Is Vadhavan Port So Important for India?

Size is only half the story. Depth is the real prize. Vadhavan Port can take ultra large container ships that many Indian ports cannot handle today. Right now, a lot of Indian cargo travels first to a foreign hub, gets moved to a smaller ship and then reaches India. Supporters say this port can reduce that extra step, which saves time and money.

The government also expects around 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs, which is about 1.2 million. The port links with the Sagarmala programme and with plans for road and rail corridors across western India. If it works as planned, goods from factories in Maharashtra and northern India will reach a deep water berth faster.

What Is the Latest News on Vadhavan Port?

Here is the Vadhavan Port latest news as of 17 October 2026. The project has moved from approvals to real construction work, though some big packages are still being decided.

Land payments. On 10 October 2026, officials said that ₹23.8 crore had been paid to more than 280 people linked to land acquisition in Palghar.

Offshore bids. The largest single package is the offshore reclamation, worth ₹20,647 crore under a public private partnership model. By 25 September 2026, four companies had bid for it, according to JNPA’s chairman. They were Adani Ports and SEZ, DP World Ports Holding India, NMDC Group and Vishwa Samudra Engineering. The bids were sent for security clearance.

Court clearance. In July 2026, the Bombay High Court allowed the removal of mangrove patches in the approach area of the near shore reclamation zone. This solved one of the pending issues that were slowing the work.

Breakwater. Afcons Infrastructure won the contract for a 10.14 km breakwater. Reports say it will become the second longest breakwater in the world once finished. A breakwater is a long wall in the sea that protects the port from waves.

Road link. On 3 April 2026, NHAI awarded the contract for a four lane road from the port to Tava village on NH 48.

How Will Cargo Reach Vadhavan Port?

A port is only as useful as the roads and rails behind it. Several links are planned or underway.

The new access road is about 32.1 km long. It includes an 800 metre twin tube tunnel, major bridges and interchanges, and it can be widened to eight lanes later.

A separate 105 km freight corridor will connect the port with the Samruddhi Expressway at Bharvir in Nashik district. Maharashtra’s cabinet approved it in August 2025 at an estimated ₹2,529 crore. The state says it will cut travel time from five hours to about one and a half hours.

Rail is planned too, with a link to the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor. In November 2025, Maharashtra also approved extending the Uttan Virar Sea Link up to the port.

When Will Vadhavan Port Be Ready?

The plan has two phases. The first phase is meant to give about 15 million TEUs of capacity, and the government’s current target is 2030. A June 2026 report put the second phase at 2034.

Please treat these as targets, not promises. The project has many separate packages, and one finishing on time does not mean the whole port is done. Big marine projects often shift because of approvals, weather and land issues.

What Challenges Does the Vadhavan Port Project Face?

The Vadhavan port project has real hurdles. Land acquisition is one, and local people have raised worries about fishing livelihoods and the coastal environment. The mangrove issue needed a court order. Large bids also have to pass security checks. How well the port treats local communities will affect how smoothly the work goes.

Does Vadhavan Port Matter for Jobs and Careers at Sea?

Yes, in a few ways. Construction, logistics and port operations will need many workers on land. Over time, a bigger port also means more ships calling at India’s west coast, and those ships need trained crews. If you want to work on them, start with our guide to Merchant Navy qualifications.

India is also pushing hard to build ships at home, not only the ports to serve them. For that side of the story, read about the top shipbuilding companies in India.

What to Remember About Vadhavan Port

The approved cost is ₹76,220 crore, and the port is planned to handle about 298 million tonnes of cargo a year.

The natural depth of 18 to 20 metres is its biggest advantage.

Phase one is targeted for 2030, with about 15 million TEUs of capacity.

The government expects around 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs.

The Vadhavan port project is no longer just a plan on paper. Contracts are out, courts have cleared key hurdles and the largest package is now in the bidding stage. We will keep following it.
